What’s the process that makes it so reliable?
1. Cutting the Glass
The process begins with cutting regular glass into the desired shape and size for windows, doors, or custom installations. The glass is precision-cut to ensure that it fits perfectly before going through the next stages.
2. Heating
Once cut, the glass gets in a specialized furnace where it’s heated to around 1,100°F (593°C) — a temperature high enough to make it soft but not too soft to lose its shape. At this stage, the glass is still malleable, and the structure moves to the next step.
3. Rapid Cooling (Quenching)
After the glass is heated to the right temperature, it’s quickly cooled down using a process called “quenching.” Air jets blow cold air onto the surface of the glass, causing the exterior to cool rapidly while the interior remains hot. This creates tension between the outer and inner layers of glass, making the surface much harder and more resistant to breaking.
4. Strengthening and Durability
The result of this process is called increased strength. Tempered glass becomes up to four times stronger than regular glass, which is crucial for high-impact environments like storefronts, homes, and commercial spaces. It can handle sudden temperature changes and physical impacts better than regular glass, making it safer and more durable.
5. Shatter-Resistant Quality
In the event that tempered glass does break, it doesn’t break into dangerous shards. Instead, it crumbles into small, blunt pieces, which greatly reduces the risk of serious injuries — a key reason why it’s favored for homes with children, businesses, and high-traffic areas.
